Established in 1898, the UI College of Nursing actively supports the recognition of nursing as a profession of leaders, scientists and researchers.

The University of Iowa has a long-standing tradition of producing nursing leaders for practice, education and research. For more than a century, College of Nursing graduates have achieved distinguished careers as scholars, educators, practitioners and nurse executives. Today, as in the past, the College of Nursing is transforming practice through education in the art and science of nursing.

Located on a Big 10 research campus, the UI College of Nursing has access to an enviable array of resources including collaboration with clinical partners at UI Hospitals and Clinics, the first Magnet-designated, and only tertiary hospital in Iowa. In addition, we have strong research partnerships with the Institute for Clinical and Translational Sciences (ICTS); Iowa Department of Public Health; Veterans Health Administration; Hardin Library for the Health Sciences; numerous community-based nursing care facilities; and a variety of interdisciplinary colleagues across the health and social sciences.

The future challenges in health care are enormous: expanding demand for care, older and sicker patients, technology that is more complex, new health care settings as well as health care team configurations. The College of Nursing is poised to address these challenges with innovative academic programs that facilitate students’ progression toward advanced academic degrees. Students develop expertise in managing major clinical conditions and health problems; acquire understanding of how systems of care delivery function; expand their facility with information management and fiscal stewardship; and become adept in implementing evidence-based practice and organizational leadership.

At Iowa, we are committed to preparing future nurse leaders with the courage, creativity and passion to use their skills and knowledge to improve the health of individuals and communities.
